break down some of these barriers and find a milder definition of the
scientific method that is a little more 'user friendly.' Combining some
dictionary definitions, a general definition of empirical research
could read:
"The principles and empirical processes of discovery and
demonstration considered characteristic of or necessary for
scientific investigation, generally involving the observation of
phenomena, the formulation of a hypothesis concerning the
phenomena, experimentation to demonstrate the truth or
falseness of the hypothesis, and a conclusion that validates or

Empirical research - The word empirical means information gained
by experience, observation, or experiment. The central theme in
scientific method is that all evidence must be empirical, which means
it is based on evidence. In scientific method the word "empirical"
refers to the use of working hypotheses that can be tested using
observation and experiment.
Empirical data is produced by experiment and observation.
